SCI National Conference

Hello all -

I just wanted to remind you all that this week (Wednesday evening-Saturday evening) Georgia State is hosting the National Conference of the Society of Composers, Inc. There will be a lot of interesting music, including that of some local friends. Also, on Thursday at 11am, Darren and Mark will be on a panel discussing "music journalism in the 21st century." It would be great if some of you can get off work and make it to this.

More details can be found here.

I was just checking in to see if anyone had posted anything yet on the conference. Thanks, Adam, for the post and the plug! Looking forward to the panel discussion.

It'll be a great conference. I know a lot of people are working hard putting it together.

Hope to see many composer friends there.

I'm actually performing on Wednesday and Friday night concerts. So I'll be there.

The panel discussion was interesting.

A couple of lively moments were:

1) When Pierre Ruhe said, "Isn't that the composer's fault?" when asked why composers and new music don't receive more media attention. That riled some people up. I think I know what Pierre was saying (even if I don't agree with it), but I'll leave it to him to explain.

2) When George Tsontakis said, "Why should they?" in response to me saying that composers need to market themselves. I wish I'd responded "What entitles them not to?" Gone is the era where composers could stay in their studios and let others take care of them. That doesn't work anymore. While George made it clear he believes that marketing yourself splits your mind and taints your work, I think the more empowered choice is to take full responsibility for your work AND get yourself out there. In the Information Age, there's really no excuse not to.

In any case, I would love to hear how all this came across to the audience. My view is a little skewed since I was up there on the panel (I was trying to keep track of where I could interject... :) What did those in the audience think? What did you get out of it? Please chime in.

Also feel free to share your other experiences at the Conference--concert experiences, impressions, etc.

Thanks to all who made it out for some (or all) of the conference. Special thanks to Darren, Mark Gresham and Pierre Ruhe for a great job on the panel and especially to all the SCI GSU Student chapter members who helped! SCI GSU Student Chapter President Brent Milam deserves a medal!! Over 80 pieces in 13 concerts over 3.5 days! What were we thinking!!??

Anyway, for those that made some of the event, I hope you enjoyed it and found it all worthwhile. Thanks always for your support!
